Others Over Yourself

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. - Philippians 2:3-4

This week I've been living in a large cabin with 25 other people. I absolutely love our family reunions, but after a few days all together, it can start to feel a little cramped and tense. Nobody wants to sit in the back corner during meals with the AC blasting on their legs. Nobody is as eager to take turns with all the games that traveled with us. Nobody wants to clean up after the cousins who left their plates on the table and escaped downstairs.

"It's not fair. I sat there yesterday AND this morning. One of the younger ones should squeeze back there."

"It's not fair. I didn't get to play this at all yesterday! You can play later."

"It's not fair. This isn't even my mess! Why should I have to clean it up?"

Sound familiar? Life isn't fair. But rather than complain that we're being treated unfairly, we're called to be unselfish and put others ahead of ourselves.

Jesus died on the cross for OUR sins. That DEFINITELY wasn't fair. But He was looking out for our interests above His own.

The next time everything in you wants to scream, "But that's not fair," remember what Jesus did for you on the cross. Don't you think you can sacrifice a little comfort to put those around you first?
