Today my husband and I are celebrating ONE WHOLE YEAR OF MARRIAGE! I can't even believe it! On the one hand it feels like we've been married for so much longer than a year, but at the same time it seems like it couldn't possibly have been a year already! I realize that I've ended every sentence so far with an exclamation point, but I'M JUST SO EXCITED I CAN'T HELP IT!!! I figured I'd just give a mini-recap of some of the things that George and I have done together during this first year of marriage. FlewWe went to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic for our Honeymoon, which required travel by airplane. I've flown many times before, but this was George's first experience with flying. We'd booked the trip through a travel agent, so all of our instructions were carefully laid out in an itinerary for us. It was so great not having to add all that extra planning to our plates at the time that we were also planning the wedding, but it also left us feeling a little out of the loop. We flew on SouthWest Airlines, which I've only ever heard great things about. And it was great... except for the open seating. When we boarded the plane, there were absolutely no two seats next to each other. So far, I'd been the calm one. Since I'd actually flown before, I'd been the one navigating us through the airport, not letting myself get stressed because I knew George was. But when I couldn't sit with my husband on the plane... hello panic attack. I didn't have any water, so I couldn't take my anti-anxiety meds, and I spent the entire time after boarding through the take off in full blown panic attack mode. It didn't help that the people I was sitting next to had been incredibly rude to me and were staring at me like I was crazy the entire time. The flight attendants eventually were able to move us toward the front of the plane to two seats across the aisle from each other. It was certainly an interesting adventure. MovedWe settled on our house a little over a year ago, but this was both of our first "out on our own" move. We got a lot of free furniture from friends and family which was amazing! But what we still didn't have, we had to purchase. I got to introduce George to the wonderful world of IKEA! Obviously, it was love at first sight. Our house is almost all put together at this point, but we still have yet to hang any of our pictures on the walls. I guess that's a goal for year two. 😂 TraveledA few months after getting married, we flew out to Washington for the wedding of two of our friends. The flying experience was much better, by the way. It was nice to be at a wedding that I hadn't had to plan and simply was able to enjoy. While we were in the North West, we also visited Seattle and got to do some sight seeing. Neither of us has travelled much, so it was a lot of fun to get to experience a new place together. We're not big on cities, but we've agreed it's the best city either of us has ever been to. CelebratedBefore we got married, we'd tried to establish some sort of rotation for the holidays with each side of the family. I think it was hard on both of us to not get to stick with every tradition we'd been used to, but it will be nice to continue to establish our own traditions. TransitionedIn early 2016, George left a position he'd had for over five years to start at a new company. It was one of our first "big decisions" and it was amazing to have my best friend by my side as we prayed together for guidance. The new hours have been an adjustment, but overall the change has been great. Looking back, this was the first open door that led to George being able to accept the youth director position at our church earlier this month. It will certainly lead to more adjustments, especially once the school year kicks off, but we know that this is where God has called us to be right now. WroteIf you aren't already in the know, George is in a band. They're called Emerson and they're pretty great (yeah yeah, I may be a little biased...). While George has been writing music for years, it's not something we'd ever done together until a couple of months ago. After processing some of the stories shared by kids in our youth group, George wanted to write a song for them to remind them that there is hope and refuge found in Christ. I might have only written a couple of of lines in the whole song, but it was so fun to create something together. I think it's my favorite song his band plays. Of course, I love the ones he's written about me too. 😍 It has been an incredible year, and I'm so excited for the years to come!
